LONDON (Reuters) - Pfizer Inc. will pay a record $1.1 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit in the U. S. District Court for the District of New Jersey on Monday, the company said in a statement.
The company will continue to market its generic version of Viagra after regulators in Britain, Australia, and elsewhere will start a review of the drug in September.
The suit seeks a $1.1 billion penalty for the company, claiming that Pfizer's patent on the drug was invalid until 2014.
The suit alleged that Pfizer's patent on the drug expired in 2014, and the drug was not manufactured in the United States until 2016.
The suit alleges that Pfizer's patent on the drug expired before the expiration of Pfizer's patents on the drug, which expired on July 30, 2012.
Pfizer said it would pay $1.1 billion to resolve the class-action, but said it will not accept a refund.
Pfizer said the case was settled by a $500 million settlement by which it will be able to launch generic versions of Viagra and Cialis without losing patent protection until the end of 2017.
